The climb is perfectly safe as you have a guide with you. I did the midnight hike to see the sunrise and took about 2.5hrs to climb and about 2hrs to go back down. The time frames depend on level of fitness and there is no rush It is definitely worth it!!

Thanks for your answer. I had heard from another tour company that we could climb the mountain from Dahab, but the monastery was closed. I hadn't checked my e-mail in time to go, but definitely would have. I was really sad I didn't get to do this. Also, it seemed the monastery was closed because of the orthodox holiday. This was especially annoying because the travel guides should have known this and told me when I booked.
