Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday said he’s attempting to get his passport back so he can accept Donald Trump’s invitation to attend his inauguration. Bolsonaro gave his passport to authorities last year as they investigate his alleged role in an attempted coup in Brazil in 2023.

Bolsonaro said his lawyer has already made a request to get his passport back so he could “attend this honorable and important historical event.”

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro claimed Wednesday that President-elect Trump invited him to attend the inauguration — but it may be difficult for Bolsonaro to attend amid his ongoing his legal turmoil.

The former Brazilian president’s passport was confiscated last year amid a probe into his involvement in an attempted coup after leaving office in 2023.
