Apple's in-house 5G modem lacks mmWave support, although its internally designed WiFi chip will be used in some 2025 iPad models.

Apple’s self-developed 5G modems may lack mmWave support, and it’s possible that Apple’s rumored new in-house Wi-Fi chip will be used in some iPad models in 2025, according to a report from Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes.

Apple is expected to equip iPhones with its self-developed 5G modem in 2025, including the newest iPhone SE as soon as 1H25 and certain iPhone 17 models in 2H25.

That’s not all. Apple will supposedly roll out its own Wi-Fi chip in new iPads next year. Alternatively, DigiTimes also suggests that the Wi-Fi chip might instead launch in the iPhone 18 series in 2026.

Apple is rumored to have been working on its own 5G modem for iPhones since 2018, but the first version of the chip might lack mmWave support.

Yet another report says Apple's own 5G modem will launch in 2025, cutting Qualcomm out of its iPhone SE and even iPhone 17 profits.

More in-house Apple chips could arrive on future iPhones and iPads as early as next year. These include Wi-Fi and 5G chips important for those products.
