It wasn't always pretty, but Washington State quarterback John Mateer helped his Cougars team grit out a double-overtime win over San Jose State on Friday night

Mateer had 307 yards of total offense, ran for a pair of long touchdowns and threw for another score in his first game as a starting quarterback in the Apple Cup.

For the first time in modern college football history, the Apple Cup features non-conference rivals. The Washington State Cougars are eager to defeat their rival, the Washington Huskies, especially with recent conference realignment leaving the Cougars feeling overlooked.
