For the first time in state history, Oklahomans voted “no” to retain a state Supreme Court justice up for retention in Tuesday’s election. FOX23 looked into what this historical result means for Oklahoma.

Iowans voted to retain Iowa Supreme Court Justice David May and four appellate judges that were up for retention in Tuesday’s election. May, who was appointed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in 2022, was up for his first retention vote. More than 63 percent of voters supported his retention, according to unofficial results Wednesday.

For the first time in history, Oklahoma voters on Tuesday removed one Oklahoma Supreme Court justice from the bench at the end of her term. In a nonpartisan election, Oklahoma voters narrowly decided to retain James Edmondson and Noma Gurich but not Yvonne Kauger for another six year term.
