Netflix’s new historical drama “American Primeval” is currently the No. 1 series on the site. But how much of the show and its characters are based on the 1857 Utah War?

Taylor Kitsch leads the brutal Netflix mini-series from The Revenant's Mark L Smith. American Primeval explores the story of the American West, charting the brutal Utah war that raged between the US Army, Mormons and Native Americans in the year in the year 1857.

The final battles of American Primeval leave a few of our main characters standing at the end, meaning Betty Gilpin, Preston Mota, and Shawnee Pourier could all return for a second season. Shea Whigham as Brigham Young could also reprise his role if the series is renewed.

Right now there's been no word on a second series of the show. American Primeval is listed as a "limited series" which would indicate it could only get a one season run. However, the series director and executive producer Peter Berg has revealed he is keen for the show to return, on one condition.

Westerns – thanks to shows like Yellowstone – have come back in a huge way. And what’s more: American Primeval tackles a fascinating subject, which is America’s only indigenous religion: Mormonism and it’s (literal) war for legitimacy.
