The Detroit Tigers could be bidding against a new mystery team for their dream free agent target this offseason.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the All-Star third baseman hasn't had any new movement with the incumbent Houston Astros.

The Detroit Tigers reportedly have competition from the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman's former team, in the pursuit for the free agent third baseman.

By helping the Astros unload the contract, the Tigers might have hurt their own chances to sign third baseman Alex Bregman, the top free-agent hitter still on the market. The Pressly trade has only fueled speculation that the Astros are positioning their payroll for a last-ditch effort to retain their fan-favorite star.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently graded the offseason for the Tigers. He gave them a mediocre grade of a ‘C’, and highlighted that while they didn’t lose anyone notable, they only made two additions that weren’t extremely noteworthy.

Bregman stands as perhaps the best position player available in free agency with less than a month before the beginning of Spring Training, and he reportedly still has a standing six-year, $156 million offer from Houston.

Among the teams that have been linked to Bregman in reports include the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. But the reality is that none of the teams listed are close to signing the All-Star infielder.
