The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is warning parents about scammers using the fear of child abduction to gain sensitive information.

California law enforcement is warning the public about an AMBER Alert scam circulating throughout the state. The AMBER acronym stands for the American Missing Broadcast Emergency Response. It’s an alert used to notify the public whenever a child is abducted.

CALIFORNIA -- The California Highway Patrol is warning residents of an AMBER Alert scam. According to a Facebook post from CHP, scammers are posing as "AMBER Alert representatives" and telling parents they will register their children. They then ask for confidential information and to go to the parents' homes.

AMBER Alerts are issued by law enforcement when a child goes missing or is in imminent danger, to increase their likelihood of being found. But the California Highway Patrol (CHP) says it’s received numerous reports of phone call scams,
