An update shows that the Jennings Creek wildfire has burned 5,000 acres of land on the New Jersey and New York border amid drought conditions. CBS News reported that officials have confirmed they have contained 20% of the flames spread across thousands of acres of land in NJ and NY.

The first measurable rainfall over New Jersey in weeks raised hopes on Monday of snuffing out a rash of wildfires that has plagued the state, while stronger winds brought concern that a California blaze that had already destroyed dozens of structures could start expanding again.

A quarter of an inch of rain fell on the Jennings Creek fire early Monday morning, which helped crews get some much needed rest. The fire remains at about 3,000 acres and is 10% contained, officials said.

Fire crews continued battling wildfires on Sunday, including a blaze in New York and New Jersey that killed Dariel Vasquez, an 18-year-old state parks employee. New Jersey’s state forest fire service said Sunday that the blaze — dubbed the Jennings Creek Wildfire — was threatening 25 structures,
