I think sephiroth is keeping cloud alive (like saving him from Midgarsormr) and pushing him away from Tifa (like his talk of her not having a scar) to eventually make him create the true black materia.

Black materia made from strong negative thoughts, white materia made from strong positive thoughts. Like the party is going to have to "positive thoughts" spirit bomb charge it up or something. I suspect it can be filled with hopes and prayers for a different future.
